This month we look at Japan's most recognizable kaiju: King Ghidorah.
Ghidorah made his on screen appearance in Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster
(1964). Arriving on Earth encased in a meteor that had crashed in
Kurobr Gorge. After being defeated by the combined efforts of Godzilla,
Rodan and Mothra. He would return (under the control of the Xians
from Planet X), to once again battle Godzilla and Rodan in Monster Zero
(1965), and a slew of monsters from Monster Island in Destroy All Monsters
(1968), where the creature was finally killed. When the Godzilla series
was revised after Godzilla 1985, the three-headed menace would return
in the third film Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1992), where the defeated
Ghidorah would be transformed into Mecha-Ghidorah to defeat Godzilla (see
"The Five
Lives of King Ghidorah" for a complete run down of Ghidorah's chronology).
Ghidorah would also feature in two of the three Mothra films, as well
as returning to battle Godzilla in Giant Monster All-Out Attack (2002).
