ASK THE "KAIJUKING"

This month, the KaijuKing answers some of the more interesting questions which have cropped up in the Godzilla series through the years in...

The Five Most Baffling Things
About The Godzilla Series

1) How does the disguised '74 Mechagodzilla move his fingers if his hands are rocket launchers?

The rockets are only the tips of his fingers, therefore it is possible for the cyborg to move and bend his fingers.  Of course as to why it never does so once MechaGodzilla is revealed is never explained.

2) What are the "things" that Godzilla pulls out of Hedorah after his first encounter with the electronic screens?  (I will NOT accept "his eyes" as an answer because you can clearly see them when Hedorah flies out from inside his old body husk and then afterwards).

There are many theories as to what exactly those objects are (one of which will not be mentioned here).  They are in fact eggs.  It is implied (although poorly) that Hedorah is about to spawn, and the objects that Godzilla pulls from his emaciated body are the eggs.

3) Can Godzilla really "talk" to the other Kaiju (besides Minya) since they are of different species?  Could a real lizard communicate with a moth, that is, if it really wanted to?  Do Kaiju understand certain words (grunts) or signals like dogs and cats do?  Is it the twin fairies (via their telepathy) that help Mothra to talk with Godzilla and Rodan in "Ghidrah, the Three Headed Monster"?  Could Godzilla really tell Angilas to "Go and check things out"?

Since it was clearly established in Ghidrah, the Three Headed Monster that kaiju can communicate with each other the answer must be "yes."  Now as to whether they communicate through a series of grunts or cartoon balloon characters depends on which film you are watching. Since the cartoon balloons are only used in the Japanese version of Godzilla On Monster Island (a.k.a. Godzilla vs. Gigan) and not in Monster Zero, Son of Godzilla, or Godzilla's Revenge, one can assume that most kaiju communicate through a series of grunts.  This also must lead one to conclude that since Godzilla communicates to Angilas with cartoon balloons then Angilas must be a moron.

4) In "Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster," before Godzilla comes out of the ocean and torches a nearby ocean liner, there is some disturbance in the water. Some rubbery-looking things are shown in the water. What are these supposed to be? Godzilla’s fingers or the tips of his dorsal fins?

Although they have often been mistakenly referred to as Godzilla's dorsal fins in several references, they are in fact, supposed to be whales (from Wales?), which have been known to swim within the wake of ships.  Whether they are in fact swimming in the wake of the ship or fleeing from Godzilla is never made clear.  Tsuburaya was know for "trying something new" with every film, and this stands as a perfect example of this.

5) At the end of "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah," how was Godzilla able to re-form himself after he melted down? I mean, we see his silhouette at the end of the film.

He doesn't.  The silhouette seen at the end of the film is of the Junior Godzilla.  Having absorbed the radiation released from Godzilla's "melt-down," the Junior is completely revitalized, and mutated into a fully grown Godzilla.
